PSHE
About Our Subject
PSHE is a bespoke subject that encompasses citizenship, personal health, sex and relationships, careers and life skills. Each student has one hour per week; they are tailored to suit age groups and needs. Lessons are sourced and written using the latest information and guidance from support services such as Worcestershire Sexual Health and the Police and the subject is delivered by an experienced and highly-skilled team of teachers. The curriculum is a planned, developmental programme of learning through which our students acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. The whole school approach at Christopher Whitehead develops the qualities and attributes young people need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.
The PSHE Department works closely with The Pastoral team and links to house and year assemblies.
The timetabled PSHE programme meets, and exceeds statutory requirements and underpins the ethos of the school. The focus changes and adapts every year to meet the needs of individual year groups and to reflect current issues. Our programme contributes to personal development by helping students to build confidence, resilience and self-esteem. The PSHE programme is viewed by Worcestershire LA as exemplary and is delivered by PSHE trained teachers. We work closely with the PSHE association to ensure that our programme of study is relevant, identifies the key concepts, skills and attributes as set out in the national curriculum framework.

The PSHE Programme
The PSHE programme at Christopher Whitehead Language College is a dedicated and bespoke lesson taken by all students for 2 hours per fortnight. The subject encompasses both statutory and non-statutory elements of citizenship, age-appropriate PHSE (Personal, Health and Sexual Education), politics and society. We feel that this part of the school curriculum is crucial in today’s society and we seek to build on our experience in supportive relationships, outstanding pastoral support and the highest standards in teaching.
The department is made up of an excellent team of teachers with a huge range of experience between them and a vast amount of enthusiasm and expertise. We have a shared vision and a mandate to provide tailored support for the needs of CWLC students whilst also addressing local, national and international changes in the world that our students need to be aware of in order to be citizens now and in the future.
We work with outside agencies including the police, NHS, mental health organisations and a wide range of charities to make our PSHE provision as up-to-date and relevant as possible. Students are regularly asked for feedback on their PSHE lessons; they tell us they highly value and rate their PSHE lessons; they help shape its content and relevance.
